Implementing Her Breathing Therapy Research for Real-World Clients

AJ’s breathing techniques benefit injured clients during their physical therapy; these clients would not otherwise be able to get the amount of exercise they need to meet their health goals. She developed a technique that adds pressured breathing to increase the amount of stress on the internal oblique and transversus abdominis muscles at a low lung volume exhalation.

This controlled breathing is done during exercise to increase the stability of the lumbar spine. She named her technique “Breathography” and uses the business name HypoXiX.

AJ has seen some intriguing results with her clients. One of her clients, for instance, had severe back pain and suffered for years with herniated discs in her lower back.

AJ had this client practice this new method of breathing therapy by blowing into a balloon or a breathalyzer during exercise. She says, “After a while, the client didn’t really love breathing into an instrument while working out. So, I developed a combination of sounds, tempo, and an increasing intensity of exhalations to not only increase the activation of core muscles, but also to temporarily raise the carbon dioxide and lower the oxygen in the lungs while training.”

This method of breathing therapy also aids in changing body composition because it increases the anaerobic work of the body at lower intensities of exercise. Ultimately, this specialized breathing allows a client to burn through more carbohydrates during low-intensity exercise, which is profoundly useful for clients who are not able to do high-intensity workouts due to injury or disease.  - JOHN ROBERT MORTON for apuedge.com

"AJ's bootcamp is like no other program that I've done before and I've tried several different programs!

First of all, as a trainer and individual AJ is positive, extremely smart and passionate about what she does and very caring. Her energy and enthusiasm during the workouts is unparalleled and she is extremely authentic. Her positive energy is contagious and left me laughing and smiling during and after the workouts (which also made me look forward to them!)

At the risk of sounding dramatic, the breathogrophy has been life changing for me. I have a stressful job which puts a lot of stress on my own nervous system. I have struggled with IBS for years and take daily medication which is pretty inconsistent in terms of how helpful it is. After the first week of doing regular breathing my Gl system was the best it's been in years. Throughout the course I actually stopped taking my medication and I have only needed to use it a handful of times since. I have struggled with significant bloat, pain, discomfort and frequent need to go to the bathroom and these symptoms have decreased significantly and on most days I don't have them at all.

Your breathing technique helped me find my deep abdominals for the first time in almost 20 years, I was able to do the supine (and even seared tilted back) abdominal work without pain in my hip flexors/psoas. Thank you so much! That was huge for me. In addition your approach and cueing to glute and hamstring strengthening was also incredibly helpful. Hi AJ! I've been on vacation in Hawaii for the last few davs and HOLY COW I CAN SEE MY ABS!! I've seen so much more definition in my abs. Especially right under my belly button which has been a difficult place for me to lose fat. On top of that, when I was snorkeling I was able to duck dive down and hold my breath for way longer than I've ever been able to. I just wanted to share this with you!
